SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Day 1 | Arrival
Arrive in Whitehaven and check into your accommodation. Use the rest of your day to explore the local area, receive your bike hire from us and prepare for your adventure.
Day 2 | Whitehaven to Penrith (87km approx)
Begin the ride with the customary dip of your rear wheel into the Irish Sea before heading east towards the rolling hills and dramatic landscapes of the Lake District. Loweswater lake appears in distance and is well worth a visit should you wish to.
The first real test comes in the shape of Whinlatter Pass. A 3.7km long climb at a gradient of 6.7%. A stop at the visitor centre cafe allows for a refuelling stop before you head down to the busy market town of Keswick.
The second half of the day is spent on disused railways & quiet lanes, before getting to your accommodation in Penrith. Why not head into town for a well-earned drink?
Day 3 | Penrith to Stanhope (69km approx)
You will quickly warm up on the bike this morning as you head uphill and east out of Penrith. The hill can be quite a challenge so early in the day but you will soon be heading downhill towards the village of Langwathby.
As the ride continues the scenery begins to change and you start the climb up Hartside Pass, one of the longest continual climbs in England. Whilst not particularly steep, the length of the hill will provide a good challenge. A fast descent follows into the picturesque village of Alston.
Be prepared for the ride that follows Alston as you head towards Nenthead - it's a tough one! After Nenthead you will reach the highest point of the C2C route and cross into Northumberland. Another good descent follows before a short climb and then descent into Allenheads. The route to Stanhope, and your accommodation, is generally downhill from here.
We would recommend spending your evening exploring the picturesque market town at your leisure.
Day 4 | Stanhope to Tynemouth (65km approx)
As with Day 3 you start the day with a climb and the ascent out of Stanhope takes the award for the steepest of the lot. From here you you cross open moorland along disused railway lines, before starting the descent towards Consett.
You soon join another disused railway line now known as Derwent Walk which leads you towards the outskirts of Newcastle. Heading around docks and over bridges you approach the city along the Tyne. Beyond the city centre you pass through Wallsend and North Shields before pedalling the last few miles to the sea.
Your journey ends at Tynemouth Castle, remember to dip your front wheel into the North Sea! From here its a short 30 minute journey on the metro back into Newcastle.
If hiring your bike from us we can collect it in Tynemouth or Newcastle. Whichever you prefer.
If you are booking train travel on this day we recommend booking for 6pm at the earliest. Road transfers back to Whitehaven or Penrith can be booked for a fee - just ask us how.
Day 5 | Newcastle and depart
Spend time exploring Newcastle before heading for home.
USEFUL INFO
Biking Info
Route Direction
Our C2C Adventure is always planned from west to east to take advantage of the prevailing winds. The gradients are generally better this way round too, with shorter ascents and longer descents to enjoy. Should you wish to ride in the opposite direction (east to west) please make us aware so we send you the correct route maps.
C2C Tradition
Don't forget to follow the traditional dipping of your rear wheel in the Irish Sea before you start. You will finish by dipping your front wheel in the North Sea when you reach Tynemouth.
Bike Type
In general all bikes are suitable to complete the C2C. We recommend a mountain or gravel/hybrid bike due to some off-road sections on our route but we can always provide alternatives for those using road bikes.
Bike Hire
We have an excellent range of bikes available to hire for this adventure. Check out the range here.
Packing
Clothing
We recommend padded cycling shorts and a comfortable top for all of our rides. Remember light waterproofs may be needed at any time of year, and a warm fleece or jacket is recommended for cooler days/evenings. Other items you may find useful are cycle gloves and a gel seat cover. Bike helmets are required at all times on our biking adventures.
Out partners at Layer offer a great range of sports and casual apparel. Check them out here.
Footwear
If you do not use cleated cycle shoes we recommend you try to bring stiff-soled shoes as they provide better support for cycling. Comfortable footwear is useful when not on the bike.
Equipment
A daypack or panniers are recommended. We also advise you to bring a reusable water bottle or alternative water delivery pack (Camelback etc.), cycle glasses, puncture repair kits and spare inner tubes. Sun cream may also be required.
Nutrition and Hydration
It is important to stay well hydrated. Tap water is fine to drink but there won't be many places to refill on the rides. We also encourage you to travel with sufficient food and snacks. A lot of the rides are in remote areas meaning shops will be few and far between.
Travel and Transfers
Starting the C2C
Our tour starts from Whitehaven which is easily accessible by car and public transport.
Parking
You have two options to consider if arriving by car. We recommend you either park in Whitehaven and transfer back from Newcastle at the end of your adventure, or park in Newcastle and transfer by train to Whitehaven on Day 1.
Getting from Tynemouth to Whitehaven
Frequent train travel is available between Tynemouth and Whitehaven and costs around £25pp. We can arrange transfers from Newcastle to Whitehaven if you would prefer.
